oh god I convinced myself to finally create a thread on here about it because I just read the lovely Sui Generis and it just killed me. And now I just want to write about Sherlock bouncing the baby in his lap and Irene wearing his nightgown when she gets up in the middle of the night to tend to Nero. If this is in the wrong place just tell me Also one of the things that have always peeved me about it was when some Johnlock shippers would take Irene and ultimately reduce her to a surrogate. It's like that is one of the last things she'd do in a situation like that please stop. gah it feels nice to get that all out. What do you guys think about them both as parents? I'd very much love to hear it

I was working in a small fic that include John dealing with the news that, a) Sherlock was alive, b) Irene was alive, and c) they had just had a child. But then S3 aired and I couldn't fit all I had written in some sort of behind-the-scenes fic and I didn't want it to be all AU-ish so I just gave up.
I think they have both the potential to be the best/worst parents ever, and it's (almost) always so ridiculously fun to read. I like to think any child of them would be incredibly independent, with an almost absolute liberty to do as they please, but I also see them as the sort of parents that wouldn't mind indulging in whatever that can feed the kid's curiosity/intelligence. However, and I think in this we all pretty much agree, the relationship between Irene and Sherlock is far from typical, so I figure parenthood and all its attachments wouldn't be ordinary either. I can't see them living in the same house, or married, not even having more than one child.
One thing, though. Fanfic has made me grown used to the idea that any hypothetical child of them would be, mostly, raised by/living with Irene, and while I see that as something totally plausible, S3 has given me the idea that Sherlock could be equally capable of taking care of their child. I don't think Irene's having a quiet, peaceful life (I almost hope she isn't), so I don't believe a kid would be safer with her than with Sherlock (other than by the fact Sherlock could forget to feed them during a case...)
And I remember seeing those headcanons haha. "Irene was so happy her head hadn't been chopped off that she offered to Sherlock being the surrogate for his first love-child with John." *sighs*

I used to hate parentlock of any kind, but now I'm a real big sucker for Adlock Parentlock. It's getting unhealthy.

I too wasn't too thrilled with the idea, but recently it's becoming my obsession. I think both of them are fully capable of taking care of the child. To Sherlock I think one of the first things on his mind would be to feed him or her. If anything John probably wouldn't hear the end of it. Sherlock telling him every single aspect of the child's development and John just laughs nervously about it all. But I am more in favor of Irene having it for some reason. Because it's not realistic at all if they lived together, it much too domestic even if I honestly wouldn't mind if they did. It would be change definitely in regards to their dynamic.

Parentlock is a pretty cool concept, but most of the time, the supposed "Adlock Parentlock fics" are just fics of John and Sherlock taking care of Irene's child? Most of the time Irene isn't even mentioned in such story. Also, I really don't know how Parentlock would fit into canonverse.

I don't really see how it would fit in canonverse either, with it being dangerous for Irene to come back to London it wouldn't be realistic. AU that's kind of like canon where Irene is a more solid presence, but she still can't truly stay I did have a fleeting thought, okay not really fleeting I'm planning a fic over here, where they kind of get together the day after he retires. I don't think I'd read a fic if it was just sherlock and john taking care of the baby without even a mention of Irene, that just sounds weird if anything.
